Tips & Guide On How To Choose Your Perfect Makeup Artist

Author - A Womens Touch Photography & Edited by Jessica Cagney.

We enjoy seeing ourselves looking glamorous. Our confidence tends to grow when we believe we are looking our best. Perhaps this explains why so many people like using cosmetics. It does some magic on our faces to instantly make us shine and radiate.

However, learning how to apply makeup on our faces is a tedious process for many. There is so much that goes into enhancing our features & makeup is definitely not a “one size fits all approach’. So, a makeup artist's expertise and years of experience is required.

It can be daunting to select the best one, though. But don't worry. We have listed all the tips you should know when choosing a makeup artist.

1.     A makeup artist needs a professional profile.

It is crucial to be aware of the legitimacy of a makeup artist.   Knowing they have profiles lets you determine whether they are legible and trustworthy. On social media, some makeup artists are active. In contrast, others develop a website for their store. You may examine their profiles on their website or social media to see whether they are legit. Also be aware when photos are taken by a professional photographer they have professional retouching done. So to ensure your makeup artist is good & doesn’t need to rely on retouching to prefect their makeup, make sure you see there “unretouched” work as well. The raw images (normally on the social media sites) are the photos that haven’t been edited and show the true reflection or quality of the makeup artists skills.

Additionally, you must be able to discover their background as a business or organisation and the previous clientele they have by reading their Bio’s on their websites.

2.     A talented makeup artist has a superb signature style.

Just because you know someone works as a makeup artist does not exclude you from examining their makeup style. Always keep in mind how big the field of cosmetology is. There are many different makeup styles, including bridal, editorial, photography and more. Additionally, knowing a makeup artist's style can help determine if they are a good fit.

To simplify the selection process, you should also determine what style you would like to achieve before you start. However, your preferred cosmetic look will depend on the event you'll be attending. Eg if it’s a beach wedding, you would keep the makeup fresh and natural looking rather than a more dramatic evening makeup look. The makeup needs to suit the enviroment and occasion.

A makeup artist knows the depth the makeup needs for it to appear a certain strenght in the photographs. The photographes are the memory you will have forever, so looking your best in the photos is crucial. You will always be in the camera's spotlight. If you don't look appropriate for the occasion, you might not  be happy with the end result. We cannot take that risk.

Remember that certain cosmetics may look attractive in person but not in photographs. So, be mindful of that.

3.     A makeup artist should have the expertise you require.

This is already a standard tip, but we have to reiterate this. It's crucial to research a makeup artist's experience and abilities before employing them. Everything should align with what you, the customer, need and expect. Most of the time, a makeup artist should possess a cosmetology certificate or license to demonstrate professionalism. However, understanding their prior works allows you to evaluate their talents and abilities.

To do this, ask candidates about their prior education, training, and related experience during the interview. You might ask them out for lunch or coffee to get to know them more personally. If neither of your schedules will allow it, you may still interview them over the phone.

4.     A makeup artist should be approachable.

Finally, having talent and skill alone is insufficient. A makeup artist should be approachable and good at communicating. They ought to be empathetic and skilled at listening to their clients. You should carefully consider their attitudes in addition to their talents to make sure that you will get along with them.

Furthermore, understanding whether or not they communicate well with you can help determine whether you will have a successful session with them. Additionally, it will offer you a sense of what kind of services are.

The bottom line

Today, there are many makeup artists. But picking the best one is vital. That is why to make sure that you look good, you must ensure that a potential makeup artist has a functioning profile. They should also have a decent makeup style that works best in event photos, is skilled in their work, and has a good character. You may be confident that you'll get the most incredible hair and makeup services if all of these requirements are met.

Booking your makeup & hair

I recommend booking your trial for a special occasion. Whenever possible its always nice too book your makeup and hair trial on the same day so you can see the completed look together. It's not always going to be possible but whenever it can be done as long as plenty of notice is given we will try our best to do so.

Firstly you are going to look fantastic so you won't want to waste good makeup just going home too wash it off. It's best too organise the trial for a special occasion like a hens night or a night out. I also recommend getting your makeup/hair done early on in the day too.

As the wedding day the makeup/hair is normally done really early on in the day. That way you can see for yourself just how long the makeup lasts & you can also give me feedback as to whether your face got a bit shiney by the end of the day & how the makeup stayed in place, then we can discuss either getting a touch up face powder or applying a fine powder over the top of the makeup to set it.

"The latest look" or makeup "that is on trend" at the moment is a dewy look, which is great BUT unfortunately the makeup needs to stay on for over 12 hours so in order for the makeup to last the appropriate products need to be used to achieve longevity. Its still possible to achieve a highlighted makeup look which still has the staying power needed to last all day/night.

If you are planning on having a fake tan make sure you have used the tanning company before and try the tan at least a few months before your wedding. As you don't want to have a tan disaster and turn out orange or patchy on your wedding day.
